Course Description
The purpose of the mathematics project is for the student to combine the
skills acquired in other mathematics modules in the production of a suitable
project. In doing this, the student will demonstrate the ability to pursue
independent study. Some projects may involve a substantial computing
element. Each student on the module will be assigned to a project
supervisor (in exceptional circumstances, the student may be assigned to
more than one supervisor). It is the responsibility of the student wishing to
take this module to ensure, via the module convenor, that a suitable project
supervisor is available.
Note: this module is available only to final year MMath students
(either Mathematics
or Mathematics with Astronomy); it may be taken in either semester,
but advice should be sought from the convenor as to the choice of semester;
Mathematics with Astronomy students may not take it in the same
semester as PA497.
Aims
The module aims to develop the student's independent study skills, writing
skills, and presentation skills, as well as developing the student's ability
to get to grips with a substantial piece of advanced mathematics through
self-study and project supervision from a member of staff.
Objectives
Pursue a course of self-study with guidance from a member of staff.
Receive instruction on appropriate use of library facilities.
Write a structured thesis on an advanced mathematics topic.
Receive instruction on making a formal oral presentation.
Give an oral and visual presentation to a group of peers and staff.
Transferable Skills
Independent study, written and oral communication and presentation skills,
use of LATEX.
Details of Assessment
The student will have weekly meetings with the supervisor; at each meeting,
progress to date will be reviewed and targets for the next week agreed. 2%
of the total mark will be awarded for the initial project description and
3% for a weekly diary. At the end of the project, each student will make a
short presentation which will contribute 10% of the final mark.
The thesis will contribute 85% of the final mark.
