Explanation of Pre-requisites

All Computer Science students will have a common core of knowledge on which to build in the third year.

Course Description

The purpose of the Computer Science Project (Modules MC312 and MC313) is for the student to combine skills acquired in the other Computer Science modules in the production of a suitable project. In doing this, the student will assimilate information from a variety of sources and demonstrate the ability to pursue independent study.

It is intended that the project should produce some end product for users other than the author. A collection of course exercises, a literature search or a descriptive evaluation would not be suitable.

Aims

During the first semester (MC312), the student will establish the lines of enquiry to be followed and produce a preliminary report, demonstrating both progress to date and a detailed plan of the further steps needed to complete the work.

Objectives

To carry out research into the background to the project undertaken.
To establish the nature of the deliverables to be produced by the project, to plan the timescales involved in developing these, and to identify the design issues involved.
To prepare and deliver a lecture style presentation on the progress made during the semester.
To produce an interim report on progress made to date and any revisions made to the original plan.

Ability to carry out independent study
Time management over a sustained course of research.
Practice in designing a substantial end product.
Presentation skills in addressing an audience during a short talk.
Skills involved in producing a written report.

The assessment of MC312 is broken down as follows:

1.: 10%: Project description document.
2.: 20%: Project plan document.
3.: 20%: Lecture-style presentation of progress to date.
4.: 45%: Interim report.
5.: 5%: Mark for student effort and participation, based on a weekly diary.
