Aims
To equip the students with the necessary skills to carry out a successful
project, and make a short presentation.
Objectives
- To gain a basic understanding of how to perform bibliographic searches in the library, and on
the internet.
- To be competent in the rudiments of LaTeX, including how to handle simple formatting
problems, how to typeset in-line and displayed mathematics, use of other symbols, use of
bibliography facilities.
- To be able to compile a bibliography in one of the standard formats.
- To be able to make a short presentation on a mathematical topics using OHP and blackboard.
- To be able to write a short coherent mathematical essay.
Transferable Skills
Use of Library, bibliographic searching, use of internet, LaTeX, compiling a bibliography,
presentations, mathematical writing.
Syllabus
How to use the library, how to compile a bibliography, how to use
LATEX, how to make a presentation, how to write a dissertation.

Details of Assessment
There is no examination for this module. The module assessment will
be as follows: 10% for a short presentation, 30% for completion of
a mathematical word-processing exercise, and 60% for completion
of a small dissertation. For students on the M.Math. degree in
Computational Mathematics, the dissertation will be on topics in
logic and discrete mathematics required for later computer science
modules.
