Subject Knowledge
Aims
This module provides an opportunity for students to learn some simple techniques for solving the sorts of problem that may arise in a business context. Students will learn some basic modelling skills, and work in groups of about six to implement a simple numerical algorithm for solving a specified problem.
Learning Outcomes
To learn some basic mathematical modelling skills. To write as part of a group a description of the problem.
To construct as part of a group a simple numerical algorithm for solving the problem. With other members of the group to document the solution and demonstrate the solution, with a justification for the validity of the solution.
To carry out on an individual basis an account of the solution process.
Methods
Lectures, workshops, computer laboratories.
Assessment
Group project report, individual solution account.
Subject Skills
Aims
To provide students with computing skills and develop written
and oral communication skills, group work skills, and problem solving skills.
Learning Outcomes
Students will have used a computer to solve some simple mathematical problem, will work on a significant project in a group context, write a group report and an individual report, and make a group oral presentation.
Methods
Computer classes, workshops.
Assessment
Marked group project, group presentation, and individual project.
Explanation of Pre-requisites
First year core syllabus in BSc Mathematics with Management.
Course Description
In this module students will learn some basic modelling skills, and apply these skills to solve a problem arising in a business context. The solution of this problem will require the coding of some simple numerical algorithm. Students will analyse their solution and comment on its appropriateness to the original problem. Students will work in a group to perform this task, and will present both group and individual reports on various aspects of the solution process.
Syllabus
Modelling skills. Report writing. Presentation skills. Simple computer programming in MATLAB.
